The diary begins with Hay's furlough home to recuperate from illness. After his return he describes operations in western Virginia until early August when the regiment moved to Washington, D. C. and the eastern theatre where he witnessed the return of troops from the Peninsula Campaign and the aftermath of 2nd Manasses. Of interest are Hays' discussions of patriotic Union ladies, Methodist preachers, sutlers, abolitionists whom he despised, and especially the poor and uneducated inhabitants of southwest Virginia. He describes constant trouble with local "bushwhackers," and various skirmishes and scouting expeditions in west Virginia including a march to destroy a saltworks. There is a brief mention of contraband coming into camp. At the rear of the volume are 3 clippings concerning the marriage of Hay to Mary Jane Funk and her death from pneumonia 3 weeks later, followed by a transcript of the funeral discourse delivered by the Rev. J. B. Baltzly.

Rutherford B. Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio, in 1822 and earned degrees from Kenyon College and Harvard Law School before starting a career as a lawyer in Cincinnati. Hayes served as a major general in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1864.
